It’s a cool little club to visit if you need a change of scenery from La Topa. Similar to all the recommendations on this list, it is also very casual. It’s a jeans-and-tennis-shoes kind of place — whatever is comfortable for dancing.

La Academia de Baile Sabor Manicero is one of the cheapest places to quickly level up your salsa game with group classes for all skill levels. It attracts hordes of students each day, making it a great place to meet Colombian friends (or if you’re like me, a Colombian wife). Cali-Style Salsa, also known as Colombian Salsa and Salsa Caleña, is based around the Colombian City of Cali. Both Cuban and Colombian salsa follow this circular pattern. Swing Latino makes the most sense for those staying in Cali long-term who want to become professional Cali-style salsa dancers. Developed by Cuban immigrants to Florida and centered on Miami, this dance style is a fusion of Casino and elements from American culture and dances. Dancers do not shift their body weight greatly as seen in other styles. Instead, dancers keep their upper body still, poised and relaxed, focusing on foot movement. Originating in Southern California, Balboa is a smooth eight count dance done in a tightly closed position with subtle and intricate footwork.
For level 1, wear what you feel comfortable in and try to avoid very grippy shoes. For level 2 and above, we recommend both leaders and followers start moving to dance shoes. In the 1950s, Salsa Rueda or more accurately Rueda de Casino was developed in Havana, Cuba. Pairs of dancers form a circle (“”Rueda”” in Spanish means “”Wheel””), with dance moves called out by one person. The two essential elements of this dance are the forward–backward basic step and the cross-body lead. In this pattern, the leader steps forward on 1, steps to the right on 2-3 while turning 90 degrees counter-clockwise (facing to the left), leaving the slot open.
If we have not heard from you within the specified timelines, you will be removed from the pending spot in the program. Zaperoco is a traditional salsa bar on the north side of Cali. Its walls are lined with photos of famous salsa figures that have visited the bar. Zaperoco is a bit cozier than the other salsa clubs mentioned.
Salsa dance socials are commonly held in night clubs, bars, ballrooms, restaurants, and outside, especially if part of an outdoor festival. The events bring dancers together to share their passion for the dance, build community, and share moves and tips. These events usually include salsa dance performers, live salsa music, workshops, open dancing, and contests. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or taking your first steps onto the dance floor, we’ll guide you through a life-changing journey. The central feature is the footwork which has quick rapid steps and skipping motions called “”repique””.
